Everyone knows Han Solo’s famous spaceship the Millennium Falcon; but what many people don’t know is that the design we now recognize as Han’s bad-ass ship was actually the second one built for him. The first design, known as the “Pirate Ship”, was more traditionally rocket shaped with a cockpit in the front and souped-up multiple engines in the back. The miniature for this original design was completed and the sets had begun construction when it was decided that the look of the Pirate Ship was too similar to another famous spaceship, the EAGLE from Space 1999. The original Pirate Ship design was scrapped and a new design with a more unique shape was quickly developed. Luckily, all the work that went into the construction of the original model was not wasted. With the change of a few exterior details and a new paint job, the ship became the “Rebel Blockade Runner”. Although it lost out on the role of Han Solo’s favorite ride, the Blockade Runner does have the distinction of being the first ship seen in the Star Wars universe. Here at the air show we are huge fans of both the original Pirate Ship and the Eagle and thought it would be interesting to create a mash-up of the two ships.
